Weather Alert: Prevent Frozen Pipes
1/23/2026
With sustained cold and subzero temperatures in the forecast for the coming days, the City of Kandiyohi recommends residents take preventative steps to reduce the risk of frozen water pipes, which can lead to costly repairs and disruptions in water service.
Immediate Steps to Protect Your Home
Residents are encouraged to take the following actions during extreme cold:
- Keep basements warm: Ensure basements and crawl spaces are heated and insulated, especially in areas where water pipes are located.
- Run water occasionally: Let a small trickle of water run to help prevent pipes from freezing.
- Eliminate cold drafts: Install storm windows or insulation on basement windows. Disconnect, shut off, and drain all outdoor hose connections.
- Wrap exposed pipes: Use pipe insulation or heat tape as needed. Do not use open flames indoors.
- Open cabinet doors: Leave cabinet doors open to allow warm air to circulate around uninsulated pipes under sinks and appliances, especially near exterior walls.
Additional Guidance
- Duration: This preventative measure may need to be continued for several days or weeks, until frost levels decrease and temperatures moderate.
- Cost responsibility: Residents are responsible for water usage recorded on their water meter while taking these precautions.
Identifying a Frozen Water Line
- No running water anywhere in the house, typically noticed in the morning or when returning from work.
- Your supply line and main shutoff valve are open.
- Extremely cold weather conditions.
If You Suspect Your Pipes Have Frozen
- Frozen pipe action: If pipes freeze, turn off the water supply (if possible) to reduce the risk of damage and contact a licensed plumber immediately.
- Use a space heater or hair dryer to slowly warm the area where the water line enters your home. Do not use a blowtorch or open flame.
Rental Properties
- Tenants: Tenants should notify their landlord as soon as possible if they suspect frozen pipes or loss of water service.
- Repairs: In most cases, landlords are responsible for repairs unless damage occurred due to tenant negligence.
