Introduction to Kandiyohi

A look inside Well #3's wooden treatment site.

Kandiyohi's water supply is provided by two wells that are more than 75 years old. Well #2 was constructed in 1941 and Well #3 was constructed in 1945. The water supply contains elevated levels of iron, manganese, and hardness. The system currently lacks treatment provisions for these undesirable contaminants.

The treatment building for Well #2 is an old brick building with a cracking façade and aging components. This site pumps chlorine gas and fluoride into the system. However, chemical components lack isolation and adequate ventilation. The treatment building for Well #3 is a small wooden structure. This site lacks adequate security and control systems. The existing treatment sites therefore do not satisfy safety requirements related to room ventilation, chemical isolation, and spill containment.

The City of Kandiyohi is seeking $3,828,000 to construct two new wells and a water treatment facility that meets safety guidelines and provides treatment for iron, manganese, and hardness.

Kandiyohi's 30,000-gallon elevated tower was initially constructed in the early 1940's. This tower is thus well-beyond its serviceable life. A recent inspection report identified numerous deficiencies related to structural integrity, security, and safety of the tank itself. Moreover, the towers high-water level provide inadequate static pressure that is well below recommended working pressure. Finally, the tower's storage capacity is inadequate for current needs and leaves no room for projected population growth.  

The City of Kandiyohi is therefore seeking $1,812,000 to construct a new 75,000-gallon water storage tower.

Kandiyohi's existing distribution system consists of approximately 15,000' of 1940's era cast iron pipe, and 1,300' of 1970's era ductile iron pipe.  Elevated levels of iron and manganese have caused significant buildup within the  water mains. These pipes have exceeded their serviceable life, resulting periodic breaks, water losses, and water quality issues. Further, the distribution system requires additional looping, which will correct stagnant water at dead ends, increase system pressure, and ultimately enhance water quality and system efficiency.

The City of Kandiyohi is seeking $5,777,000 to replace the existing cast iron and ductile water mains. The city also hopes to replace its aging valves and hydrants to ensure safe and reliable water supply. 

The city's sanitary system was originally constructed in the 1940's. This system still includes 2,600' of clay pipe sewer main and 6,300' of "white" PVC service lines. These clay and white PVC pipes have reached their serviceable life. A recent report found that the deterioration of older pipes and joints has caused excessive volume of inflow and infiltration and inflow that reduces efficiency and increases treatment fees. This excessive inflow is due primarily to degradation of older pipes and separation at joints. 

The City of Kandiyohi is seeking $4,240,000 to reconstruct sewer lines that are aged and allowing excessive inflow and infiltration.
